South or Central Maui best for First Time Visitors

Most of this information on this webpage is focused on South/Central Maui. If you are staying on Maui for a short amount of time and want to minimize wasted time, I strongly recommend you stay in Kihei, especially if you are younger (under 60) and/or have children. The most touted activities on Maui (zip lining, horseback riding, Maalaea Ocean Center, Paia town, road to Hana, etc.) are more easily reached from south/central Maui than the westside of Lahaina. If you stay in Lahaina, you are adding at least an hour’s driving time to every activity mentioned above. Of course, there are beautiful places to stay, horseback riding, etc. in the Lahaina area, but many visitors, especially those new to Maui, are drawn toward the east side of Maui due to the tales of the rainforest beauty of Keanae and its waterfalls, the mystical bamboo forest, the legendary road trip to Hana and the windsurfing capital of the world, Paia. Restaurants in South Maui and... ?

It's expensive to eat out, so these restaurants make my 'favorites' list because of the value they provide for the price. Here are my recommendations, in no particular order. South Kihei/Wailea 1. Tanpopo - An Italian/Japanese fusion restaurant, if you can believe it. Incredible food, friendly service. 2. 1054 Togoshi - Authentic Japanese sushi. Very serious sushi chef and artist Do not disturb. Just eat and enjoy, 3. Cuatro - Long established local and visitor favorite. Tiny restaurant but big on service and flavor. 4. Kamana Kitchen - Next door to Quattro's is a fabulous Indian restaurant. I've not enjoyed Indian food anywhere else on the island, and I've tried. This is the only place I've found that offers great flavors and authentic taste. 5. Cafe Ole - It has "

Beaches in South Maui

I think Baldwin Beach in Paia on the east side of the island is one of the best, cleanest beaches on Maui. On the west side, Lahaina beaches are famously blue and beautiful. In comparison, Many beaches in south Maui are a bit sandy or rough. I think it has to do with the way the waves hit the island. However, that being said, here are few of our favorite beaches for our south Maui visitors. Wailea Beach Showers, restrooms, grass. Hard to find because it has a TINY sign off the street. But it’s right after the Wailea hotel. Mana Kai Beach Popular beach, showers, no public restrooms, grass, shade Makena Beach Park Porta potties, some shade, beautiful but typically hot. There is more than one entrance and I am not super familiar with this beach, so explore a bit, before parking. Sugar Beac h A little sandy strip along the highway.
